This Remembrance Bench is for our community in honor of Daniel “Riley” Burns who died January 13, 2020 at the age of 54 following a courageous battle against amyloidosis.
While receiving treatment out of state in 2019, Riley contacted then board President Ellen O’Brien, and shared with her that he was going to make a bequest to our Seward Area Hospice Fund. Ellen remembers chatting with him and states, “he seemed to know he would not be returning to Seward, but retained his very upbeat, positive attitude about it.” Thanks to Riley’s generosity we now have a General Fund and an Endowment Fund.
Sarah Spanos, who was best friends with him for over 30 years shared, “ Riley was the definition of Minnesota Nice. He bled purple; next year for sure for the Vikings. He wanted to make Seward better, he loved this community and the people.” She added, “the view from his bench is spectacular over looking the water, where he worked and played. Riley may not be with us on this earth but his memory will be kept alive”.
It is our hope for those who grieve that that you will find comfort, peace and healing in this special place next to the ocean.

“May the ocean be your companion, the stars your light and hope the anchor for your soul as you sit with me and remember.” -Anonymous
